  • Biography

Carl Mitcham is Professor Emeritus at the Colorado School of Mines and a founding figure in the philosophy of technology. His monograph Thinking through Technology (1994) established the foundational distinction between engineering and humanities approaches to technology. His major editorial works include the four-volume Encyclopedia of Science, Technology, and Ethics (2005) and The Oxford Handbook of Interdisciplinarity (2010). Mitcham served as the first president of the Society for Philosophy and Technology and has received the Abbot Payson Usher Prize (1973), the SPT Lifetime Achievement Award (2022), and the Sterling Olmsted Award (2021) for distinguished contributions to humanistic education in engineering.
